About the Project
The project involved the transformation of a former Courtaulds Factory Shop and Armstrong Mill Outlet – a massive, complex space with a rich industrial past. Our task was to reimagine and repurpose the space into an educational hub, a process that involved a complete interior overhaul.
The ambitious plan required the removal of all interior walls, followed by the careful design and construction of nine classrooms, two boardrooms, eight offices, a library, and IT labs. It was a testament to our team’s adaptability and ingenuity, demonstrating our capacity to handle large-scale, complex transformations.
Design considerations, types, and advantages
Our design approach for this project was guided by the goal of creating a space that promotes learning and collaboration while honoring the building’s industrial roots.
Design Considerations:
The design of each space was tailored to its intended use, from spacious, versatile classrooms to high-tech IT labs and functional, efficient offices. Given the building’s history, we also worked to preserve elements that spoke to its original purpose, blending old and new in a harmony of design.

Types
Our team at TRENT Construction prides itself on creating versatile spaces that cater to diverse needs, and this project was no exception. Each area in the facility was designed with its unique purpose and function in mind:
Classrooms: We constructed nine classrooms, each designed to foster a conducive learning environment. Our classrooms feature ample space for student interaction, state-of-the-art technology integration, and design elements that optimize comfort and concentration.
Board Rooms: Our two boardrooms are tailored to facilitate effective decision-making and strategic discussions. These rooms are equipped with modern conferencing technology and are designed to promote collaboration.
Offices: We crafted eight offices with a keen focus on productivity and comfort. These spaces provide an optimal work environment, with a balanced mix of private and collaborative spaces.
Library: Our library design emphasizes quiet study and research, with areas for both individual and group work. We incorporated ample shelf space for resource materials, comfortable seating, and lighting designed to reduce eye strain.
IT Labs: In today’s digital age, IT labs are essential components of modern education. Our IT labs are equipped with high-speed internet and the latest computer technology, providing students with hands-on experiences in a safe and controlled environment
Advantages
The transformation of this massive factory shop and mill outlet into an educational facility brought about several key advantages:
Space Optimisation: By repurposing an existing structure, we’ve made the most efficient use of space, creating various functional areas within the same footprint. This approach not only saves on construction costs but also reduces the environmental impact associated with building new structures.
Sustainability: The project aligns with sustainable development principles, minimizing waste and lowering carbon footprint. By retrofitting an existing structure, we’ve extended the building’s lifecycle, contributing to the conservation of resources.
Preservation of Local History: By repurposing a building with a rich industrial past, we’ve helped preserve a piece of local history. While the building now serves a new purpose, its character and original architectural elements have been retained, creating a unique blend of the old and the new.
Promotion of Learning: The diverse spaces within the facility cater to various learning styles and needs, promoting an inclusive approach to education. The IT labs, library, and classrooms provide a diverse range of learning environments, enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes.
Community Development: By transforming an unused structure into a vibrant educational facility, we’ve contributed to community development. The project has revitalized the local area and is now a hub for learning and grow
